Picasso
Said to be one of the greatest artist of the 20th century, Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Clito Ruiz y Picasso, or Pablo Picasso for short, was born on October 25, 1881 to art professor at the School of Crafts and a curator of a local museum and a painter named Jose` Ruiz Blasco and Maria` Picasso Lopez in Málaga, Spain. When he was born the midwife thought that he was a still born and layed him on the table in in able to atend to his mother. His uncle was a doctor and was in the room smoking a cigar, which, back then is a practice most doctors partook of. He happened to blow a puff of smoke into the babies face and Pablo began to cry. Picasso as a child was very serious, have dark black, piercing, observant eyes; some say it was a "mark" of greatness. "He remembered, "When I was a child, my mother said to me, 'If you become a soldier, you'll be a general. If you become a monk you'll end up as the pope.' Instead I became a painter and wound up as Picasso." (Biography.com)" He was, surprisingly, a horrible student, and much like Miro he excelled in his artistic classes. He was a prodigy, drawing since he was two years old. His first words were piz piz short for lapiz the Spanish word for pencil. His formal education began when he was seven years old. His teacher was his father, who after Pablo thirteen, claimed that he no longer had anything more to offer to his son whose artistic ability surpassed his. This realization led his father to give Picasso all of his brushes, canvases, and pallets and vowed never to paint again, for as long as he lived.
Picasso, in 1894 began to produce oil paintings and in one year began to exhibit and sell his paintings for a small amount of money. Another, big event that also took place in 1894, was his sisters death, which caused turmoil in the young artist live. After her death the family packed up and headed to Barcelonaso that Pablo could further his career. In 1895, he was accepted into the School of Fine and Applied Arts in La Coruna, it was highly an highly acclaimed school which usually only excepted kids several years his senior, but after seeing Pablo scores immediately accepted him into the school.It was also impressive that a boy of his age could finish the entrance exam which took others a month, in a week. Picasso, in 1894 began to produce oil paintings and one year later he began to exhibit and sell his paintings for a small amount of money. Contrary to his artistic life which was flourishing, his academic life was declining. "For being a bad student I was banished to the 'calaboose' - a bare cell with whitewashed walls and a bench to sit on. I liked it there, because I took along a sketch pad and drew incessantly ... I could have stayed there forever drawing without stopping" He would often skip and walk around drawing objects and buildings.
Following his friends death at, 1900-1904 he went through a period where his paintings all contained underlined shadings of blue. They often had malnourished people who looked as if on the verge of death. It is said that throughout this period of his life he was depressed and because of the lack of people buying his work he became poor and hungry. This is typically considered the "blue period". But, in 1901 he and a friend started a political magazine Arte Joven (Young Art), which makes sense since most of his art work featured the current wars and civil wars that were taking place then. Soon after 1905-1906 he went into the "Rose period" in which his paintings have more of a friendly air to them. His art during this time consisted of circus like characters. After Picasso moved to Paris, he was able to rebuild his career. There he met many more famous artist like Joan Miro and Salvador Dali. During his stay there, he helped co- found the Cubist movement. Throughout the first decade of the 1900s he experimented with different types and styles of art.
He was at times, characterized by being a sarcastic, feminist, superstitious man, who at times was rotten to his children. He despised women artist and showed it throughout his art work. Even after all of this woman, flung themselves at him, which earned him the label of a "ladies man". Even though he only had two wives, he had a plethora of mistresses. He fathered 4 children with 3 different women.
On April 8, 1973 while hosting a diner with his wife at their home he died of heart attack. His last words were: "Drink to me, drink to my health, you know I can't drink any more."
